Tama Open Weave Placemat

$24

Founded in 2007, Indego Africa is a nonprofit social enterprise propelling the creation, growth, and sustainability of women-owned businesses in Africa. From the fine raffia weaving in their bags to the woodcarving in their homewares, the brand provides women and youth with the vocational skills, business know-how, and pipeline to global markets to become self-sufficient entrepreneurs. The intricately woven Tama Open Weave Placemat creates a beautiful table setting or statement charger. Handcrafted by women artisans, each placemat showcases the beauty of the time-honored weaving technique passed down from generations of artisans in northern Ghana.

Product Details

Natural color. Locally sourced elephant grass. Indego Africa’s bolga products are made from 100% elephant grass, a strong, resilient grass that grows abundantly in Northern Ghana. Before weaving, the grass is prepared by hand—splitting, twisting, and softening with water, in a process that takes about a week to complete. The intricate process is done entirely by hand, from processing elephant grass to weaving the fibers, and can take an artisan anywhere from 3-5 days to complete a single piece. Due to the handmade quality, some size and color variation may occur.

Care Instructions

Spot clean. Made to last, the natural fibers in bolga products are incredibly resilient. If your placemat becomes slightly misshapen, simply saturate the woven portion with cool water and mold back into shape. Let dry, avoiding the sun to minimize color fading.
